Auto-running character leaping over spikes in a rhythm platformer

The character never stops running, so the only thing you contribute is when to press. Every spike, pad and portal in a stage sits on the beat of the music behind it, which means the soundtrack is a set of instructions rather than decoration. Players who watch the screen struggle. Players who listen start clearing sections they could not read, because the rhythm arrives slightly before the obstacle does.

How to play Challenge Rush

  1. Play the opening section a few times without trying to survive it. Learning the tune is faster than learning the layout.
  2. Tap on the beat rather than on the obstacle. The two line up, and reacting to the beat gives you a fraction more time.
  3. Treat portals as rule changes. Each one alters how the character moves, and the timing you had a second ago no longer applies.
  4. Hold through pad sequences. Several stretches want a continuous input rather than separate taps.
  5. Build the level editor stages gradually if you use it. A section that is unfair on the first attempt stays unfair on the fiftieth.

Tips

  • Sound on is not optional. With the music muted this is a much harder and much duller game.
  • Deaths cost nothing but a restart, so run the difficult passage repeatedly rather than trying to be careful.
  • When a section refuses to click, count the beats out loud once. Naming the rhythm usually fixes the timing.

Questions about Challenge Rush

Is there more than one button?

No. Everything is a single jump input, and the entire difficulty lies in when you use it.

Does the music actually matter?

Yes. Obstacles are placed on the beat, so playing with sound is significantly easier than playing without it.

Can I make my own stages?

There is an editor, and community stages are a large part of what people play.

Why do the controls change mid-level?

Portals swap the movement rules on purpose. Recognising the new one quickly is part of the challenge.
