A sandbox built from cubes, and the most influential game of its kind by a distance. Every block in the world can be removed and placed elsewhere, which is a simple rule with enormous consequences: terrain becomes material, material becomes tools, and tools let you reshape more terrain. Nothing tells you to do any of it. That absence of instruction is the design. The first session is usually about surviving a night — gathering wood, making a shelter, discovering that the dark contains things that want you dead — and everything after it is self-directed. Some people build, some mine, some farm, some engineer contraptions out of the game's logic system, and all of those are the intended way to play. The crafting tree is deep enough to support months and shallow enough at the start to get going in minutes. What the browser version gives up is scale and mods, and what it keeps is the loop: dig, build, craft, survive. It needs a keyboard and mouse to be comfortable, it needs a moderately capable machine for a large view distance, and it remains the clearest demonstration that a game does not need goals if its materials are interesting enough.

How to play Minecraft

  1. Gather wood first; every early tool comes from it.
  2. Build a shelter before the first night rather than exploring.
  3. Make a crafting table and better tools as soon as you have material.
  4. Mine downward in a staircase so you can always walk back out.
  5. Light the areas around your base to keep hostile spawns away.

Tips

  • Stone tools are a large upgrade over wood and cost almost nothing, so make them immediately.
  • Always carry a few blocks for bridging and a torch for the dark.
  • Digging straight down is how most early worlds end.
