Paper Minecraft

A two-dimensional take on the block sandbox, built in Scratch and surprisingly complete. The loop is intact — mine blocks, craft tools, build shelter, survive the night — and flattening it to a side view changes the experience in ways that are interesting rather than merely reductive. The main change is that everything is visible. In three dimensions a cave is a mystery until you walk into it; here the cross-section shows you what is above and below, so exploration becomes a planning exercise rather than a discovery one. Digging down is still how you find ore, but you can see what you are digging toward, which makes the early game considerably less lethal and the building more deliberate. It is light enough to run on anything, which is the point of a version like this, and the crafting tree is deep enough to give several hours of progression. The controls are simple, it works with a keyboard and mouse, and it asks for no download or account. As an introduction to the genre for a weak machine or a locked-down one, it does the job better than it has any right to.
