Super Bear Adventure

A 3D platformer in the late-nineties collectathon tradition: open areas rather than linear levels, a generous jump, and collectibles hidden in places that reward curiosity. The goal is to free captured friends, and the structure exists to give you a reason to explore rather than to test your reflexes. It is deliberately gentle. Combat is simple, falling rarely punishes much, and there is no time pressure anywhere — which is the right set of choices for a game whose pleasure is poking around. Each area has considerably more in it than the path through requires, and the satisfaction comes from noticing a ledge that is reachable rather than from executing a difficult jump. The movement is loose in the way platformers of that era were, which will read as charming or imprecise depending on what you grew up with. There are several hours of content, progress saves, and the areas unlock gradually. It needs a keyboard and mouse for comfortable camera control, runs on modest hardware, and is suitable for children. A small, sincere game that is clearly made out of affection for the things it is imitating. The tone is the other reason to play it. Nothing in it is cynical or hurried, the characters are pleasant to be around, and the whole thing is content to be a small game made well rather than a large one made quickly.
