The items are what turn it from a coin flip into a game. A magnifying glass tells you what is next, a saw changes the stakes, a cigarette buys back a mistake, and using them well means knowing when information is worth more than action. The dealer plays the same odds you do, which makes it a genuinely fair contest, and the tension is manufactured entirely by the fact that the correct play and the comfortable play are frequently not the same. It is a small, tight, unusually well-designed game.
