The crossword, presented plainly and without anything added to it. A grid, a list of clues, and the interface staying out of the way — which is most of what a digital crossword needs to get right, and a surprising number get wrong by adding timers and scores to a puzzle form that never wanted either. What makes it work as a daily habit is the crossing mechanic that crosswords have always run on: a word you are sure of gives you letters in words you are not, so progress compounds from a few confident answers rather than requiring you to know everything. Difficulty varies by day, the grids are properly constructed rather than generated, and there is no penalty for leaving one half-finished and coming back. It is the oldest word puzzle there is and it still works better than most things built since.

How to play Crossword Puzzles

Fill in every clue you are certain about first, anywhere in the grid.
Use the crossing letters to attack the clues you could not read cold.
Look at the enumeration; word length rules out far more than it looks.
Come back to a stuck grid later rather than guessing — fresh eyes genuinely help.
Leave the reveal alone until you have exhausted the crossings; it removes the puzzle.

Tips

Short words at the edges are usually the easiest entry point into a difficult corner.
Common endings give letters cheaply, which is often enough to break a long answer open.
If a confident answer makes its crossings impossible, the answer is wrong rather than the grid.
