A word ladder, which is one of the oldest puzzle forms there is and still one of the best. You are given a four-letter starting word and a fixed target, and each move may change exactly one letter provided the result is a real word. Getting there is usually straightforward; getting there in the fewest steps is not, and that gap is where the puzzle lives. Because the target never changes, the game develops into a study of which letter positions are worth altering early, and experienced players start recognising the intermediate words that act as junctions between whole families of solutions.

How to play Poople
- Work backwards from the target as well as forwards from the start. The middle is usually where a route becomes obvious.
- Change the vowel early. Vowel changes open more branches than consonant changes do.
- Look for words that share three letters with the target, since they are the last step before finishing.
- Accept a longer route rather than getting stuck. A completed ladder is worth more than an abandoned optimal one.
- Play daily. The recurring target means every solved puzzle teaches something reusable.
