A horror game built out of ordinary domestic detail. You are a teenager alone in a house for a night, the things you do are the things anybody would do — lock up, watch television, answer the phone — and the horror arrives through small deviations from that routine rather than through anything supernatural. That realism is the whole technique and it works because the game is patient with it. There is no combat, no inventory puzzle chain and very little you can do wrong; what there is instead is a slow accumulation of details that stop adding up, and the growing awareness that the safest-feeling room in the house has a window in it. It is presented as a found-footage recollection, which gives it a frame and a slightly grubby visual style that suits the material. Short, controlled and considerably more effective than its simplicity suggests.

How to play Fears to Fathom

  1. Do the tasks as given; the game paces itself and rushing skips the build-up.
  2. Look at the detail rather than hunting for objectives — the detail is the content.
  3. Check what has changed between rooms rather than only what is in them.
  4. React when something is clearly wrong; hesitating is what the design plays on.
  5. Play it in one sitting with the lights off, which is plainly the intended way.

Tips

  • The house is small on purpose; if something seems irrelevant it probably is not.
  • Sound carries nearly all of the warnings, so audio is not optional.
  • There is very little you can fail, which makes the tension entirely atmospheric rather than mechanical.
