Ragdoll characters hopping across rooftops towards a waiting helicopter in a race

A race where nobody can walk. Each character moves by throwing their weight left or right, which means every step is a small hop and every gap is a leap of faith. Three rivals are doing the same thing beside you, weapons are scattered along the route, and the finish is a helicopter that will not wait. The comedy and the difficulty come from the same place: you never quite control where you land.

How to play Getaway Shootout

  1. Alternate the two keys in a rhythm rather than holding them. A steady beat covers ground faster than frantic tapping.
  2. Press both at once for height when a gap is too wide for a hop, then steer with a single tap on the way down.
  3. Grab everything you pass. Weapons are the only way to slow the other three, and holding one is better than needing one.
  4. Aim at whoever is ahead. Knocking back the leader is worth far more than damage spread evenly among the field.
  5. Learn each map's shortcut. Every route has one gap that looks impossible and is not.

Tips

  • Falling behind is recoverable; falling off is not. Take the safe ledge when you are second and the risky one when you are last.
  • Two players on one keyboard is where this game lives. The single-player field is practice for it.
  • Time trials are the fastest way to learn a map, because nobody is shooting at you while you learn it.

Questions about Getaway Shootout

Why can't my character just run?

Movement is deliberately reduced to two directions of lean. Everything difficult and everything funny about the game follows from that one restriction.

Can two people play together?

Yes, on the same keyboard with separate keys. It is the mode the game is built around.

What are the weapons for?

Slowing the opposition. They rarely eliminate anyone outright but a well-timed hit costs a rival several seconds.

How many maps are there?

Enough that memorising them matters, and a time trial mode exists specifically for learning them.
