A two-dimensional physics sandbox with the objectives removed on purpose. There is a stage, a spawn menu full of ragdolls, melee weapons, firearms, explosives and vehicles, and nothing whatsoever telling you what to do with them. Being 2D rather than 3D turns out to be an advantage here: everything is visible at once, placement is precise, and chains of cause and effect are far easier to set up than they are in a sandbox where the camera has to be managed. What people build ranges from careful contraptions to piles of everything at once, and the game is equally content with both. The absence of a goal is doing more work than it appears to. Sandboxes with objectives quietly teach you the intended way to use them, and this one never does, so the tools stay genuinely open. A firearm is as reasonable a way to move an object as a vehicle, a vehicle is as reasonable a way to demolish a structure as an explosive, and nothing in the game has an opinion about which you should have chosen.

How to play Ragdoll Playground

  1. Start with two or three objects. The physics are far more interesting when you can see what is affecting what.
  2. Build a structure before introducing anything that will destroy it.
  3. Use weight and height rather than explosives for the most reliable results.
  4. Clear the stage when it fills up, since clutter costs performance and hides the outcome.
  5. Repeat a setup you liked. Small differences between runs are part of the entertainment.

Tips

  • Vehicles make good delivery mechanisms and poor transport, which is worth knowing before building around one.
  • Anchoring one end of a contraption stops it collapsing before the interesting part happens.
  • If the frame rate drops, remove objects rather than reloading. The stage is usually salvageable.
