Squid Game

A reaction game built from elimination rounds, the best-known of which gives you a few seconds of permitted movement followed by a moment where any movement at all is fatal. The mechanic is simple and the pressure comes from everybody else being subject to it at the same time. That crowd is the real difficulty. Alone, stopping on cue is easy; surrounded by dozens of players doing it slightly differently, the peripheral motion makes your own timing feel wrong, and the common failure is reacting to somebody else's panic rather than to the signal. The rounds that follow add different tests — bridges, shape cutting, tug contests — but the first one is where most players are eliminated and it is entirely a nerve problem. Rounds last a minute or two and elimination is immediate with no second chance within a game, which is the point. Lobbies fill with real players, the presentation is clean, and it runs on weak hardware. It plays with two or three inputs on a keyboard or touchscreen. Short, tense, and best played in a few attempts rather than a long sitting.
