Whentaken

A deduction puzzle built on a single photograph, asking two questions: where was it taken, and when. The second is what makes it unusual — geography puzzles are common and dating an image requires a different kind of looking, at clothing, vehicles, signage, film quality and architecture. Those two axes interact in useful ways. A building's style narrows the place; a car in the foreground narrows the year; a photograph's grain and colour narrow the decade before you have looked at anything in it. Scoring is by distance in both dimensions, so a near miss on either counts, and the interesting failures are the ones where you were confident about the place and forty years out on the date. It is also an efficient way to learn. Seeing the correct answer immediately after committing to a guess builds a sense of period detail that no amount of reading does, and the daily format means the learning accumulates rather than happening in one sitting. Rounds take a few minutes, there is no account required, and it works on a phone. The photographs are well chosen — clear enough to read and ambiguous enough to be a puzzle, which is a harder balance to strike than it sounds.
