Jelly-like footballers colliding around the ball in a wobbly arcade football match

Football with the rulebook thrown out and the physics turned up. Seven players a side wobble around a pitch with no offside, no stoppages and no interest in tactics, and the ball ricochets off whichever body part it happens to meet. Defending is mostly a matter of getting in the way, and the best goals are the ones where nobody involved could plausibly claim to have meant it.

How to play Super Liquid Soccer

  1. Get body between ball and goal. Positioning does more here than any attempt at a controlled tackle.
  2. Slide early. The tackle takes a moment to land and a late one leaves you on the floor while play moves on.
  3. Shoot from anywhere. Deflections are frequent enough that a hopeful effort is a genuine tactic.
  4. Chase the second ball. Most goals come from the scramble after a save rather than the shot itself.
  5. Play a friend on the same keyboard. The format is at its best with a human being equally out of control beside you.
  6. Use the goalkeeper's rebounds. The ball rarely comes back where anyone expects, and standing off the post is where those loose balls arrive.

Tips

  • A crowd in front of goal helps the attacker. If you are defending, spread out rather than converging.
  • Do not follow the ball everywhere. One player holding a position turns half the chaos into a chance.
  • Customising the team changes nothing about how it plays, so pick whatever looks best and stop thinking about it.
  • A slide tackle that misses leaves you out of the play for a good two seconds, so keep one of them for the moment it genuinely matters.

Questions about Super Liquid Soccer

Are there any rules?

Almost none. No offside, no fouls worth the name and no stoppages, which is what keeps the pace up.

Can two people play?

Yes, on one keyboard with separate keys, and that is the mode the game is built around.

Why does the ball go in strange directions?

Every contact is resolved physically off a wobbling body, so a knee and a head send it very differently.

Is there a season or a cup?

There are matches and customisation rather than a long career mode.

Does team choice change anything?

Only the look. Every side moves the same way, so pick on appearance and spend your attention on positioning instead.
