A security office with two doors, a bank of cameras and a battery that everything runs from. Checking a camera costs power. Turning on a light costs power. Holding a door shut costs a great deal of power. The game is therefore an arithmetic problem wearing a horror costume: how little information can you get away with, and how late can you afford to react.

How to play Five Nights at Freddy’s

  1. Check the power percentage more often than the cameras. It is the only number that ends the night on its own.
  2. Use the door lights before the doors. A light is cheap and tells you whether the expensive option is needed at all.
  3. Keep the monitor down when nothing has changed. Watching an empty corridor is the most common way to run out of power.
  4. Close a door only while something is actually there, and open it again immediately afterwards.
  5. Learn which threat comes from which side. Two of them are predictable enough to plan around once you know their route.

Tips

  • A night survived at four per cent counts exactly the same as one survived at forty. Spend the power rather than hoarding it into a panic.
  • Sound is information. Footsteps and other noises tell you more cheaply than the cameras do.
  • The later nights are not faster, they are less forgiving of wasted checks. Tighten the routine rather than speeding it up.

Questions about Five Nights at Freddy’s

What actually kills a run?

Running out of power, or leaving a door open when something is at it. Both are resource failures rather than reflex failures.

Do the cameras help or hurt?

Both. They tell you where things are and they drain the battery while you look, which is the central tension.

How many nights are there?

Five to complete, with harder variants beyond them for players who want more.

Is there any way to fight?

No. Doors and lights are the entire toolkit, and both are limited by the same battery.
