Hide and seek where hiding is a materials problem. You can paint your character any colour you like, but colour is only the first of three things that give you away. The surface behind you has a roughness and a shine of its own, and a matte body against polished metal stands out under the light no matter how well the hue matches. Then there is your pose, which has to agree with the geometry you are pressed against.

How to play Meccha Chameleon

  1. Choose the hiding place before touching the paint. Painting first and then hunting for a matching surface is backwards and wastes the round.
  2. Sample the surface rather than eyeballing the colour. The sampler gives you the values the renderer is actually using.
  3. Match roughness as carefully as hue. A shiny body on a matte wall is visible from across the room even in the right colour.
  4. Fit the pose to the geometry. A silhouette that does not belong to the shape behind it reads instantly, however good the paint is.
  5. Check where the light is coming from. A perfect match in shadow can be a poor one when the light moves.

Tips

  • Corners and clutter are friendlier than flat walls, because a broken outline hides a bad silhouette.
  • Avoid clipping into scenery. It looks like camouflage and reads as an error to anyone looking carefully.
  • If a spot keeps failing, it is usually the shine rather than the colour. Drop the metallic value first.

Questions about Meccha Chameleon

Is colour matching enough?

No, and that is the whole idea. Roughness, shine and pose all affect how the light treats you, and any one of them can expose you.

What does the sampler do?

It reads the exact surface properties behind you so you can copy them rather than guess.

Does the lighting change?

It can, which is why a spot that worked once is not guaranteed to work again.

Is it a fast game?

Not especially. It rewards looking carefully and adjusting, more like a puzzle than a chase.
