A first-person horror game built almost entirely out of absence. The corridors are identical, the lighting never changes, and for long stretches nothing happens at all — which is the point, because the dread is manufactured by your own certainty that something eventually will. There is no weapon and no map, so the only tools are memory and the willingness to stand still and listen. What makes it work better than it should is that the sameness is functional rather than lazy. Because every hall looks alike, you are forced to navigate by the small things that differ — a stain, a missing light, the direction the hum is coming from — and that turns walking into an act of concentration. When something does appear, the reaction it wants from you is not a fight but a decision about which way to go, and getting that wrong is how runs end.

How to play Backrooms

  1. Walk rather than run by default. Sound is what finds you, and running is the loudest thing available.
  2. Navigate by details, not by direction. The corridors repeat and your sense of heading will not survive them.
  3. Stop and listen at junctions; the audio tells you more than the view does.
  4. Back away the way you came when something is ahead, rather than trying to go round it.
  5. Learn the layout across attempts — that knowledge is the only progress that carries.

Tips

  • Silence is information too. A stretch with no hum is usually not a safe one.
  • If you are lost, pick one wall and follow it; wandering is what exhausts a run.
  • Running is occasionally correct, but only once you already know where you are going.

Questions about Backrooms

Is there combat?

None. Avoidance is the only option.

Is there a map?

No, and the corridors are deliberately near-identical.

How does it find me?

Noise. Running and careless movement draw it closer.

Is it mostly jump scares?

No, it runs on anticipation and long quiet stretches.

Does it need a keyboard?

Yes, movement and looking both want one.

Does it need installing?

No, it runs in the browser.
